BAD HABIT
PRODUCTIONS CELEBRATES 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF
SPEED-THE-PLOW
INAUGURAL SEASON CONTINUES
WITH TONY-NOMINATED PLAY
(Boston, MA) - Bad Habit
Productions (BHP) presents the third show in its premiere season, David Mamet's
Speed-the-Plow, directed by Adam Sanders. The production runs
from February 15th to 24th at The Factory Theatre, 791 Tremont Street, Boston,
with a press viewing scheduled for Friday, February 15th at 8:00 p.m.
Speed-the-Plow is Mamet’s Tony-nominated dissection of the movie
industry and the Hollywood machine. In this satirical comedy, he combines tight
plotting and clever dialogue to examine the inherent conflicts between
art and profit. The play debuted on Broadway in 1988 and featured pop icon
Madonna in the role of Karen, the temporary secretary.
Adam Sanders received his BA from UMass Amherst in 2004 and is
currently a master's degree candidate at Emerson College. While at
UMass, Sanders was artistic director and producer of the Amherst
Renaissance Company. He directed with the UMass Theater Guild and the UMass
Shakespeare Festival, and assistant directed with the UMass Theater Department.
In Boston, Adam assistant directed the improv troupe “Flaming Awesome” and
played Leontes and the Shepherd in BHP’s September 2007 production of
Shakespeare's The Winter’s Tale. On his choice to direct the
beloved Mamet play, Sanders states:
“At first glance, Speed-the-Plow
seems gratuitous, dirty, or maybe even degrading, but behind the grime there’s
a very delicate inquiry of honesty and humanity. The characters are 'living in
a World of Truth.' They are brave enough to ask real questions of each other
and to hear real answers. Mamet shows us that we may not be completely
satisfied with ourselves and the world, but there’s one thing that can help us
improve: a honest day’s work.”
The production features Kate
Bailey as Karen. Hollywood producers Charlie Fox and Bobby Gould are
played by BHP veteran Derek Fraser (previously seen as Antigonus
and Autolycus in The Winter’s Tale) and Mikkel Raahede,
respectively.
Speed-the-Plow is BHP's third installment of its four-show
"Season of Hope," which included sold out productions of A.R. Gurney's
The Dining Room last July (directed by Daniel Morris) and William
Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale last September (directed by Midori
Harris), and showcases Neil Simon's Barefoot in the Park in April
(also directed by Morris).
The production is open to the
public. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door. Tickets are $12
online or $15 at the door ($10 for students/seniors). Visit
